Remembering 'Tiger' of Indian cricket

LUDHIANA: The cricket fraternity of the city gathered at the cricket ground of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Friday evening and lit candles in the memory of legendary international cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who passed away on Thursday.

Former Ranji player and city based cricket coach, Amrik Singh Nagra, said he was fortunate to share a few moments with the former Indian captain at Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi, during a camp organized by Bishen Singh Bedi Cricket Coaching Trust. Popular as 'Tiger', Pataudi would stress on the need to set up proper infrastructure to groom better cricketers in India, recalled Nagra.

Pataudi had a commendable contribution in the development of Indian cricket at international level and had lead India to its maiden test victory abroad, said Nagra. Tiger played 46 tests for India between 1961 and 1975 and held the record of being the youngest test skipper of Indian cricket team at 21, until 2004.

Australia coach Nielsen resigns

Tim Nielsen steps down as the head coach of Australia's national cricket team after four years in the role.

Defending champions England have been drawn with India and a qualifying nation in the group stages of the 2012 World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

England will begin the defence of the trophy they won in the Caribbean in 2010 against the qualifiers in Colombo. The England women's team, looking to regain the crown they won in 2009, have been drawn with Australia, India and a qualifier. The finals of both tournaments take place in Colombo on 7 October 2012. After opening against the qualifiers, who will be determined in a tournament in the United Arab Emirates in March, England play 2007 champions India two days later. If the competition then follows the pre-tournament seedings, England can expect to come up against West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the Super Eight stage.

Pakistan seal Zimbabwe series with record partnership

PAKISTAN WIN OVER ZIMBABWE Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez with 139 runs and Imran Farhat with 75 formed a record-breaking opening partnerhip of 228 runs against Zimbabwe here Sunday to secure an overwhelming win in the second ODI to take the three-match series. Hafeez, who recorded his third ODI century and was later named man of the match for the second time on this tour In reaching 30 runs, Hafeez passed the 2000 mark in ODIs, adding more than 100 more on the way to the next thousand. It was the fifth time that Zimbabwe had been beaten by ten wickets in 400 ODI's played over the years. In restricting Zimbabwe to 225 runs at Harare Sports Club, Pakistan kept the home batsmen well under their thumb. This was the fifth match in a row against touring sides that Zimbabwe have lost. The final ODI of the tour is on Wednesday and two Twenty-20 matches follow. Zimbabwe's hopes of redeeming themselves with those three encounters cannot be very high.

We will give our best shot in final game: Dhoni

LAST ONE DAY India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hoped that his boys would be able to win at least the fifth and the final ODI against England after the fourth ODI here at Lord's ended in a tie due to rain interruption.
India were staring at their first win on English soil but rain interrupted the match for the third time when the hosts needed 11 runs to win off seven balls with two wickets in hand.
But with the rain falling the Duckworth/Lewis method came into play and India were unlucky. England clinched the series with still a match left.
"We have not won anything. It has been a long tour, we have one more game, we will give it our best," said Dhoni, who scored 78.
Dhoni had words of praise for Suresh Raina, who struck a blistering 84, with whom he shared a crucial 169-run that propelled India to 280 for five and the tourists seemed set to secure their first win over England, having suffered a whitewash in the Test series.
"We know Raina has fair amount of firepower and if he gets going can destroy any attack in the world," said Dhoni.
The India captain also praised part-time spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up the crucial wicket of Ian Bell, who scored 57.
"Jadeja is doing his job brilliantly. In conditions like these, it is hard for the part-timers. Today when the ball got wet, we had enough resources," said Dhoni. Raina, who was adjudged as the joint Man of the Match with Ravi Bopara, said he was disappointed at not getting a big score.
"I was batting well but not getting big scores. My game plan is simple, when I get the ball in my areas, I play my game. Disappointing for Ravi to not have got the 100," he said.

RAIN SPOILS AGAIN England clinched the one-day series against India as a gripping fourth game ended in a rain-affected tie in a confusing finale at Lord's. The tourists seemed set to secure their first win over England this summer after posting a challenging 280-5. Ravi Bopara scored a magnificent 96 to guide England to the brink of victory. But with the rain falling and England needing 11 to win from seven balls, three rain delays eventually saw the Duckworth/Lewis method come into play. Both teams were guilty of using delaying tactics as a confusing final few overs saw both sides in pole position at different points. England were ahead of the required rate going into the penultimate over but Graeme Swann was run out by Munaf Patel and the same player had Bopara caught on the boundary to ensure the match was declared a tie after a further delay. And although the result was a probably a fair one, it was a shame such an entertaining encounter should end in such comical circumstances. Skipper Dhoni laid the platform, reigning in his attacking instincts and allowing Raina to play the more fluent, attacking knock as they batted sensibly and kept wickets in hand for a devastating finale. And they both cut loose in the final 10 overs, bludgeoning the ball to all parts in scoring 109. Dhoni demonstrated his class with a second successive half-century, hitting three sixes - the highlight of which was clubbing Swann for a huge six over midwicket. Raina was equally as effective, smashing a massive maximum off Broad as all bowlers took some serious punishment in a wonderfully entertaining spell that saw the pair post the best fifth-wicket stand for India against England in on-day internationals. Broad's stint ended in doubly painful circumstances, as he was unable to complete the final over after pulling up with an injury to his right arm. With the momentum with India, England's response started badly, with Craig Kieswetter and skipper Alastair Cook both falling to the much maligned RP Singh. Jonathan Trott soon followed, playing on to Praveen Kumar as he looked to up the run rate on the powerplay but Bell and Bopara set about rebuilding in much the same way as Dhoni and Raina had done. Bell's innings ended when a rare, rash shot saw him attempt to loft Ravindra Jadeja towards long off and he was well caught by Manoj Tiwary. Ben Stokes quickly followed Bell back to the pavillion and although Tim Bresnan's fine 27 from 22 balls gave England hope. But then the rain - or the very real threat of it - took over. With the clouds gathering England did their best to get ahead of the required rate and Bopara did a wonderful job of doing so before that crazy 49th over which saw India claim two wickets. The tourists thought they had done enough to win but eventually found out they had not pegged the series back to 2-1 and now go Wales knowing they are just playing for pride.
